Science and Technology in Society

Description/What to do in the classroom
Students will research and define the laws of motion, speed and inertia.
Students will research some of the technologies used in creating and testing safety equiptment.
Student will complete tryscience.org experiments and online activities as guided by instructor.
The class will collect notes and data.
Students will create a comic book featuring Mr. Egg explaining how knowledge of motion, speed and inertia is used in creating and testing safety equiptment.

Things to consider/science behind it
How science and technology are used to create safety equiptment that we use everyday.
How the knowledge of the laws of science are important and useful in society.

Summary below

Number of TryScience.org features used
0-5

Titles of TryScience.org features
Gravity in Action: The students will complete the experiment and research/ discuss how various technologies and knowledge of science are used in creating parachutes.

Speed, Egg and Slam and Eggs at Rest Stay at Rest: The students will complete the experiment and online activities. They will then discuss/ brainstorm which laws of motion are used in making seatbelts and air bags.

(We were unable to do any field trips because our school is in a correctional setting.)

Materials Used
Tryscience.org
Materials needed for completing tryscience.org experiments.
Paper, Markers, Colored Pencils

Results of student feedback and teacher assessment of activity
The students were very excited and motivated by the tryscience.org experiments and website. The students are in a correctional treatment facility and do not often get to do leisure activities. Many commented on how this unit was one of the most fun things they had the opportunity to do in a long time.
The students really thought the research material was more interesting because they were able to apply it and see how it was used in daily life.
The student created comic book as an assessment tool worked well.
(The students now beg me to let them go online and do the experiments on the tryscience.org website.)
I will use this resource in the future. Thank you.
