SPRING 2005 EVENTS

To promote the idea of “Science. It’s Everywhere,” this spring our partner sites in Austin, Chicago, and Los Angeles are hosting a variety of fun and educational activities for the public. See below for details on the Spring 2005 events.

AUSTIN – Sat., April 30
Enjoy a day of reading and science at "D�a de los ni�os / D�a de los libros - Day of the Child / Festival of Books," Austin's only bilingual celebration of books, reading, and family learning. Austin Children's Museum will have a Science Tent Collaborative at the event.

DATE: Sat., April 30, 2005
TIME: 10 am - 2 pm
PLACE: The St. John Branch Library and J. J. Pickle Elementary School 7500 Blessing Avenue, Austin, TX
COST: Free
DETAILS: The Science Tent will feature hands-on science activities and "make and take" projects sponsored by Austin Children's Museum, Lower Colorado River Authority, Texas Education Agency, Austin Nature and Science Center, Texas Memorial Museum, The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and Wild Basin Nature Preserve. Among other things, children will be making and taking fossil casts, edible aquifers and wildflower seedlings in plantable eco-pots they make themselves!
DIRECTIONS: From I-35 North, Take exit number 240A- toward US-183/ANDERSON LN and turn right on Anderson Lane, then turn right onto Blessing Avenue.

CHICAGO – Sat., May 21
Explore a world of nature and science in the great outdoors for the third annual “Science in the Park” event sponsored by The Notebaert Nature Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, and Chicago Park District!

DATE: Sat., May 21, 2005
TIME: 10 am to 1 pm
PLACE: Wooded Island in Jackson Park, just south of the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago (see directions below)
COST: Free.
DETAILS: Enjoy games, arts, face painting, storytelling, puppetry, live animals, give-aways, and hands-on activities to engage your family and excite your senses! Participating organizations include the Notebaert Nature Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago Park District, Field Museum, Museum of Science & Industry, Spring Brook Nature Center, Brookfield Zoo, Forest Preserve District of Cook County Shedd Aquarium, Emily Oaks Nature Center, and Eden Place.
DIRECTIONS: Heading south on Lake Shore Drive, go past the 57th Drive exit; the Museum of Science & Industry will be on your right. Turn right at the first light after 57th onto Science Drive. Head west towards the Clarence Darrow Bridge (slightly southwest from the Imax entrance of the museum) and the north end of the Wooded Island.
PARKING: There will be ample free parking spaces.

LOS ANGELES – Sat., June 11
Just in time for summer fun, visit our family festival and find out about science- it's everywhere! Institutions from around the community will join us as we investigate the wonders of the world around us.

DATE: Sat., June 11, 2005
TIME: 10 am - 5 pm
PLACE: Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007
COST: Free with museum admission (adults $9, seniors (62+) $6.50, students 18 and over with ID $6.50; prices for children are $6.50 for ages 13-17, $2 for ages 5-12, and free for kids under 5 years old).
DETAILS: This year’s event has three main components: (1) Specialized science classes for participating families (in Spanish and English); (2) Exhibits by science organizations in the community; and (3) Family Fun Day activities to involve museum visitors in hands-on science learning. Participants in the classes will learn about science outdoors, science in a facility (such as a museum, aquarium, or zoo), and science in the home. Organizations including JPL, Cosi West, Long Beach Aquarium, La Brea Tar Pits, Heal the Bay, Huntington Library and Gardens, Observatory, National Wildlife Foundation, Wildwoods Foundation, National Forest Foundation, and the Los Angeles Zoo will have educational information, activities, films, and more. Visitors will get a chance to meet our museum’s curators and learn about working as a scientist! The science experiment stations will feature activities such as tracking animal footprints, collecting bugs, learning about a frog’s life cycle, learning how plants “drink” water and change colors, exploring senses through sight/sound/smell, and growing crystals.

SPECIAL NEEDS: All exhibits are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Wheelchairs and strollers may enter through the Staff Entrance on the Ground Level. Wheelchairs are available on a first-come first-serve basis and can be checked out at the Staff Entrance by leaving a driver's license or other form of valid identification. Lehigh Valley – Sunday, June 25 and Sunday, July 27
Bienvenidos…Welcome to a day of fun, food, music, and SCIENCE! The Lehigh Valley Science Providers will join the Puerto Rican Cultural Coalition of Bethlehem, PA and the Puerto Rican Cultural Alliance of Allentown, PA to celebrate the Puerto Rican culture – it’s foods, music, and artifacts. Hands-on science activities will be provided by the Lehigh Valley Science providers at the various tables and tents…including science in a fun-filled family day!

TIME: 1 pm - 6 pm / 12 pm – 5 pm
PLACE: Bethlehem: Spring & Main St., Bethlehem, PA Allentown: Jordan Park 6th & Sumner St. Allentown, PA
COST: Free
DETAILS: Come join us for a family day of music, activities, and entertainment within the Latino community to celebrate the Puerto Rican heritage. At both events, a parade will lead the thousands of people who attend too enjoy the delicious Latin foods, various vendors, live music, games, and fun hands-on science activities. The participating science providers include: Da Vinci Discovery Center, The Lehigh Valley Zoo, Hawk Mountain, The Rodale Institute, Wildlands Conservancy, Delaware Canal State Park and Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center.
DIRECTIONS: Bethlehem: Rt. 22, Take 378 S. exit #3 towards Center city, turns to 3rd Ave. and becomes Rauch St. turn left to Spring St.
Allentown: From Rt. 22, Take the 7th Street (South) exit, turn left at third light.
